In 1994, Meiningen celebrated the 100th anniversary of the death of Hans von Bülow with a one-week state music festival. This commemorative year lead to the founding of the International Hans von Bülow Society.
The society's important fields of work include concerts, such as those featuring Bülow's vocal works (examples are concerts in Wiesbaden, Schloss Molsdorf, Bayreuth, Berlin), lectures, essays in professional journals, as well as the publication of an online bibliography and the organization of a 3-day Bülow anniversary celebration that took place in Meiningen during March of 2005 and commemorated the 175th birthday and the 110th anniversary of the death of Hans von Bülow.
Additionally, the society contributed a donation to the restoration of Bülow's gravesite, which is located at the Olsdorf graveyard in Hamburg. Mutual memberships link the International Hans von Bülow Society with the Brahms Society Hamburg, the Raff Society and the Friedrich Kiel Society. Since its founding, the International Hans von Bülow Society has been attempting to direct the public eye toward Hans von Bülow while simultaneously furthering the cultural recognition of the Southern Thuringia region, serving the theater and music town of Meiningen in particular. The Society hosted the first Hans von Bülow International Piano Competition in 2012; a second competition followed in 2015. The competition will enter its third season in 2018.
